I am currently the Chairperson of
Central England People
First
It is an organisation made up of people with learning difficulties.
Being labelled a person with a learning difficulty has meant that I have not had the opportunity to do things other people would be able to do. It means that I get treated differently from other people.
This includes being sent to a special school where I did not have the opportunity to learn things that other people learnt at school.
Apart from being the Chairperson of Central England People First I do many other things for the organisation. I am the Internet Officer which includes being the Web Manager for our web site, writing many of our web pages. I do our payroll, paying our staff and volunteers. I do training and consultancy work as part our organisation's work. This has included advising the United Kingdom Benefits Agency on their services for people with learning difficulties.
I like watching and playing
football, reading books and birdwatching. My favourite birds are
all swans and birds of prey
I support Leeds United.
We have just started our own football teams here. It is called People First United! One team will be for women and one will be for men. We need sponsorship to help fund our teams. It costs a lot of money to run a football team. If you can help please contact us at the address below.
I used to live in Manchester. I moved to Northampton in October 1994 to be where the action is! In Manchester I helped with starting Manchester People First. I made a video With Manchester People First which is called 'I Am A Person Not A Label'.You can buy it from Manchester People First.
